About the Author
As you may have noticed by now, Mark is a breed all his own. Some may call his style unconventional, and the rest would probably agree! Mark got his start as a business owner early in life. He was only 10 years old when he hit the streets with a bucket and some soap and began a weekly car wash service for his neighbors. That led to his first “real” job with a lawn maintenance company at age 14. Mark was a hard worker. One of Mark’s mottos is, “If it’s worth doing, then it is worth overdoing.” While this is not the balanced approach he takes with his clients now, it might explain his “achiever” mindset in everything he does. At 17 years old, he decided he was ready for some independence; he moved out and got his own apartment while finishing high school. He graduated high school Salutatorian. That is second out of his entire class. After high school, he did not slow down. Mark put himself through college while working as a self-employed tile contractor and purchased his first home when he was 21 years old. While on a tile job, Mark was scouted to become a model and worked in the US and Europe for about 8 years. He was on television, on magazine covers, and inside more catalogs than I can count. Seeing him on billboards was fun but odd. Following his time in Europe, he worked in sales and marketing with a new product development firm. Never one to let an opportunity pass him by, he left that lucrative position to earn his real estate license, become a loan officer, and travel with a real estate investment firm. When the real estate market crashed, Mark changed direction. He headed back to college to expand his accounting, bookkeeping, and tax preparation knowledge where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Accountancy. So what does Mark do for fun? Aside from loving the fact that he is married to his best friend and business partner, he has the cutest daughter ever and three amazing stepsons. Mark loves life. He loves traveling and photography but cannot go more than a day or two without surfing. Mark loves to play tennis, or golf, or volleyball, or soccer, or ping pong, or pretty much any sport. Heck, he has even managed to make movie watching a sport. While not a big fan of reading, he still manages to read 1-2 hours a day. He works hard and plays hard, is abundantly humble, curiously intelligent, and savagely good-looking. Parts One and Two are designed to help the reader develop both the terminology needed to discuss reproductive problems associated with physiology of reproduction as well as understand the physiological processes controlling reproduction. Parts Three, Four, and Five emphasize the application of basic concepts to the management of reproduction in livestock. In fact, as the title suggests, this text is unique in the emphasis it places on the applied aspects of reproduction. The authors have successfully endeavored to retain the book's overall writing style. There has been some reorganization and substantial revision with three new chapters replacing two chapters from earlier editions. These chapters are Mating Behavior (Chapter 7), Synchronization of Estrus and Superovulation with Embryo Transfer (Chapter 18), and Reproductive Biotechnology (Chapter 19). Other new features of this edition are sections on hormone-like factors and other hormonal mediators, and methods for measuring reproductive hormones in Neuroendocrine and Endocrine Regulators of Reproduction (Chapter 4), immunological considerations during pregnancy in Gestation (Chapter 9), biosynthesis of milk in Lactation (Chapter 11), and Physiological, Toxicological, and Psychological Causes of Reproductive Failure (Chapter 25). We are pleased to present the sixth edition of Applied Animal Reproduction. Some significant changes will be apparent in this edition, as compared with earlier editions. Dr. Scott T. Willard is now a part of the author team. Dr. Willard is an emerging reproductive physiologist with an interest in and a philosophy for teaching undergraduate students that is compatable with that of the other two authors of this text. There is some reorganization of chapters in this edition and three new chapters have been included. A new chapter, "Mating Behavior," has combined elements from Chapter 5, "The Estrous Cycle," and old Chapter 11, "Male Mating Behavior." This is the new Chapter 7 and is located in front of the chapter entitled "Ovigenesis and Fertilization." Chapter 18 from earlier editions is now two chapters, Chapter 18, "Synchronization of Estrus and Superovulation with Embryo Transfer," and Chapter 19, "Reproductive Biotechnology." The information in these chapters has been updated and expanded considerably. Several tables and figures have been added to the text, and color plates that are representative of material covered in the book are grouped at two locations. There has been substantial revision of several other chapters. Two new sections, "Hormone-like Factors and Other Hormonal Mediators" and "Methods of Hormone Detection and Measurement," are found in Chapter 4, "Neuroendocrine and Endocrine Regulators of Reproduction:" A section on immunological considerations has been added to Chapter 9, "Gestation," and a section on reproductive toxicology has been added to Chapter 25, "Physiological, Toxicological, and Psychological Causes of Reproductive Failure." Further, Chapter 11, "Lactation," has been expanded to include new information on the biosynthesis of milk. Updated information can be found throughout the text. Even though there is considerable revision in this edition, the writing style has not changed. Also, the reorganization has been minor and should not affect the lecture format of instructors who have been using this text...This text is intended to give the undergraduate student majoring in animal or dairy science a complete overview of the reproductive processes. It is assumed that these students have a limited background in physiology. Therefore, a major effort has been made to maintain clarity. It is hoped that this style of writing will also encourage use of this text in 2-year agricultural curricula and in short courses where participants have a more limited educational background. Sixty combined years of experience in teaching a course in physiology of reproduction-to students with a wide divergence of backgrounds have influenced the level of writing and the organization of the book. Comments and suggestions from students were given careful consideration during the preparation of the text. Parts 1 and 2 are designed to help students develop both the terminology needed to discuss problems associated with physiology of reproduction and an understanding of the physiological processes controlling reproduction. These parts have been updated to provide students with recent information. Chapter 4 will be difficult because the concept of endocrine regulation will be new to most undergraduate students. When this information is reinforced in later chapters on reproductive processes in the female and the male, these concepts will seem less troublesome. Early introduction permits development of a more profound understanding of the neuroendocrine and endocrine regulation of reproduction. Parts 3, 4, and 5 emphasize the application of basic concepts to the management of reproduction in livestock. This text is unique in the emphasis that is given to the applied aspects of reproduction. Only the most prevalent theories are presented, and these have been simplified rather than presented in lengthy discussions on the pros and cons of these concepts. A consensus is presented where disagreement exists in the literature. Also, reference citations are not listed in the text. A carefully selected reading list has been included at the end of each chapter. Each topic is covered in two pages or less, even big ones like How to Sell a House and How to Manage Debt, while other segments—such as A Week in the Life, which superficially covers a rather uneventful week in Trump’s life—run on far too long. The final third of the book consists of a teaser for the new season of The Apprentice. Trump provides a general overview of the first four episodes, but doesn’t give away any specifics about who gets the boot. Instead, he coyly says, "My first firing wasn’t terribly difficult, although I always feel bad for the first person to go because he or she will miss out on so much." After spending several evenings reading and reviewing the concepts and diagrams in book, I decided to purchase it, deciding that it would make a wonderful addition to my dental library. I was a little bit worried about buying a book that was written over 7 years ago, but many of the concepts and techniques that Dr. Magne discusses still hold true.The book is divided into 9 chapters:Chapter 1 - Understanding the intact tooth and the biomimetic principle.Chapter 2 - Natural Oral EstheticsChapter 3 - Ultraconservative Treatment OptionsChapter 4 - Evolution of Indications for Anterior Bonded Porcelain RestorationsChapter 5 - Initial Treatment Planning and Diagnostic ApproachChapter 6 - Tooth Preparation, Impression and ProvisionalizationChapter 7 - Laboratory ProceduresChapter 8 - Try-In and Adhesive Luting ProceduresChapter 9 - Maintenance and RepairsThe book stresses the biomimetic approach, which I think is more of the swiss school of dentistry. (Making the teeth look realistic and polychromatic.)The photos in the book are well taken, something to aspire towards. The book is also part of the recommended readings from the American Association of Cosmetic Dentists (AACD). (It also comes in a laminated box, something I didn't expect, but is a nice to have.)

One of the best books on restorative dentistry.

this is a fantastic book. you'll find there pretty much everything you might need about the topic. It has been very carefully thought through too. it is very easy to read, no rubbish, just the practical stuff. The book itself is a piece of art, beautifully printed and finished.look no further!

Dr. Magne has created an excellent study of anterior porcelains restorations. The book itself is well put together with beautiful photographs and and current information.

A must read for all dentists. Should be mandatory in school. This book demonstrates the confluence of biology, chemistry and physics.

2 issues:- when I did the buy, ther was an offer of, free quick shipping for the first delivery made at Amazon. After sellecting it the price for shipping was 50 dollars almost. I just realised later. It was offer to me 1/2 payment which I accepted, but I don't think thats a good policy. A little tricky for newcomers from other contries.- When the book irreved it came whit a jag at the hard cover. But actualy i didn t complain. But, not ook for an hard cover in a book as expensive as this one.Sorry for my english,Carlos Martins

The author takes an revolutionary approach to restoring anterior teeth, a Biomimetic approach. The author goes back to basics and studies nature i.e. the form and function of natural teeth. He then studies how each tissue (dentine/enamel) behaves mechanically (when loaded) and where the forces and stresses concentrate. These findings then lay the foundation as to how teeth should be restored i.e. should they be restored so they are as strong as nature (mimic natures strength) or stronger. The author tends to favour the former approach, and goes about outlining materials and design principles that will achieve this result. He presents an extremely interesting method and commonsense approach to restoring teeth. By reading this book, it allows us to reflect upon the potential disasters (verticle root fractures, decorination) that may be caused by restoring teeth in the traditional way (crowns & posts) whereby making them stronger than nature.

This book is a must have if you enjoy doing bonded porcelain restorations and you want to see how a master does it. The lab work is unbelievable and the photography is excellent. Its like having an Ansel Adams book: you have to see how the best do it so that you have something to aspire to.The cost is pretty high, but so what. You will want to take notes when you read this. If you are really flush with cash, buy one for your lab tech.
