As a PhD student, I had written dozens and dozens of research papers before reading this book. I wish now that I could redo them. The information presented in this book is clear and thorough. Even on my first skim of the book I have learned valuable skills that will improve my writing!! I only wish my undergrad professors had forced me to read this book previously!!

Beginning with the sobering fact that almost a billion people don’t have access to clean water, Chellaney gives the reader multiple snapshots of existing water-related tensions around the world, then offers several risky but necessary solutions based on current UN-based international rules. This book argues that even though water is of fundamental importance to humans, we have undervalued it and have therefore failed to create institutional mechanisms at the international level to ensure its prudent use. This argument is developed in detail in five chapters, considering both the scientific and political implications of water use. Chellaney (Center for Policy Research, New Delhi) notes the geopolitical impacts of water shortages on the frequently bellicose behavior of Israel and its neighbors. The author then provides a credible account of the ways in which China has become an unprecedented water hegemon. The reader learns that China's unabated dam building has allowed it to control the headwaters of several international rivers and manipulate their cross-border flows. Therefore, concerted external pressure is needed to get Beijing to accept some form of institutionalized cooperation. The author concludes that in order to prevent water-based conflicts, a set of international rules, cooperative institutional mechanisms, and environmentally sustainable water management solutions will be needed. Chellaney's attempts to draw causal connections between water and actual problems can sometimes be questioned, but his book, while occasionally repetitive, provides a lucid account of the nexuses between water security and world peace. Chellaney sketches a bleak picture of water scarcity in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, regions also struggling with unstable governments and rapidly growing populations. What Chellaney calls "water stressed conditions" are also appearing in developed countries, such as Australia, Spain, and South Korea. Even the deep-water aquifers that support modern agriculture in North America are dwindling. But will the social and environmental stresses of water shortage lead to conflict and armed violence? On that question, Chellaney's book is more speculative. Conflicts over water have already embroiled states along the Nile basin, in Africa, and along the Tigris-Euphrates basin, in the Middle East, and the war in Darfur has at least partly been driven by clashes over access to water in Sudan's far west. Chellaney makes it clear that such conflicts will become more common as water begins to be "used as a weapon," as a recent U.S. intelligence assessment predicted, at least in a metaphoric sense, as upstream countries deny water to downstream ones. Chellaney calls for transparency, collaboration, and sharing across borders. About the Author
Brahma Chellaney is a strategic thinker and a geostrategist tracking major international trends. He is a professor of strategic studies at the independent Center for Policy Research in New Delhi, a fellow of the Nobel Institute in Oslo, a trustee of the National Book Trust, and an affiliate with the International Centre for the Study of Radicalization at King’s College London. He has served as a member of the Policy Advisory Group headed by the foreign minister of India and an advisor to India’s National Security Council.

As a specialist on international strategic issues, he has held appointments at Harvard University, the Brookings Institution, the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University, and the Australian National University. He has also been a Bosch Public Policy Fellow at
the Transatlantic Academy in Washington, DC.

The title is misleading. There aren't any "secrets" here - in fact, some of the "secrets" are fundamental knife skills that anyone with a basic interest in cooking already knows: julinene your vegetables (cut them into matchstick-shaped pieces); cube your vegetables; use a melon-baller to make spheres...Other instructions include:- Waffle fries- Make a lattice top for a pie- butter balls- curly fries- quenelles- how to dip fruit in chocolate- how to make a compound butter (butter with seasonings in it)Other ideas include old-school, traditional things like radish roses and tomato roses.I do give them credit for providing clear instructions with step-by-step photos - this would be valuable to those who are just starting out with cooking. The photos of the completed dishes are not gorgeous "food porn" shorts - the food looks like someone made it at home without food stylists or the help of Photoshop. This may be a good or bad thing for the reader depending on their viewpoint - some won't be "wowed" or inspired to make the dish; others may encouraged by looking at the images and thinking, "Oh, I can do that."Aside from the instruction section, the book provides some basic information about place settings, essential equipment, and establishing mood lighting. The final section about edible flowers, shoots, and leaves is the only information you may not find in a basic cookbook.WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM THE BOOKThis book is about entertaining at home.It would be helpful for someone who wants to host dinners but has no idea where to start. Maybe someone who just graduated from college or someone who has cooked for family and now wants to up their presentation game. Additionally, it is nice to have a variety of techniques collected in one place, even though the techniques are basic. This saves you from having to sift through a couple of cookbooks to get the information you are looking for.However, if you already have a basic cookbook or two (cooking fundamentals and baking/dessert fundamentals), you are better off sticking with these and looking for inspiration on the Net.I'm giving the book two stars because the title is misleading - there aren't any secrets here. If they had named the book "Knife cuts, Garnishing and Plating 101" I'd give it 3.5 stars.

My husband is a chef and I bought this for his use and for me to learn more about food presentation. The book's techniques for decoration and the illustrations are very good and helpful. They provide a lot of information and helped me imagine more and better ways to present the food. I would have rated this book higher but the recipes that are provided are wrong in many cases .We first noticed a problem when we were making the fruit in jelly dessert on page 101. My husband said it looked like it called for too much gelatin for the amount of liquid. He did some calculations on the quantities and was sure this was the case. We went ahead and followed the recipe to the letter and the jelly turned out extremely hard. Even cutting the amount of gelatin to half was still too much.We then made the tuile paste from page 162. When we baked it it turned into a runny, unusable mess. My husband then started going through several of the recipes and noticed more errors. For example, on page 164 the red bell pepper sauce recomends running it through a sieve withou mentioning the need to puree the ingredients first.I am lucky to have a professional chef in the house otherwise I would have been very frustrated trying to make the recipes and having them turn out "wrong" when in reality it is the book that has the errors.The book is still very useful but if you are not very experienced in the kitchen the errors may prove difficult to identify and overcome.

I really enjoy this book because it teaches how to think more critically about plating, and gives ideas that can be applied across a wide spectrum instead of being specific to one dish. This book doesn't just tell you how to make a Parmesan basket or a candied lemon peel, it helps you think critically about why you should add them to your meal, what kind of compliment/contrast they provide to dish, how to create your the table setting, plate, and lighting choices, and so much more.My favorite thing overall though is an illustrated "table of contents" section towards the beginning so you can thumb through designs and then flip to the page you want once you find something you like. You don't have to read the book cover to cover; jump around to what suits you. There's a nifty time and difficulty identification at the top of each one so you know exactly what you're getting into.Overall, if you want to step your food game up, I highly recommend this book.

When I bought this book, I was hoping for more theory and concepts on how to make food look great, with some examples to back up the concepts. It was the reverse: It had a TON of examples (which are beautiful by the way), but very little theory. I felt a bit misled buying the book, but I'm sure other people might prefer how it was done.Pros:TONS of picturesTONS of examples and techniquesCons:The book is kind of small, which makes the gorgeous images small.Not much theory on presentationThe organization of the book could be better.

I just bought a wonderful knife fromZELITE INFINITY Chefs Knife 8 inch - Best... and this book, along with the knife, has me ready to cut up everything in my Garde Manger class. The pictures and the directions are , all, wonderful. This is the modern book that I've been looking for.

I purchased this book as a gift so I can't comment on the recipes. I agree with other reviews that commented on the pictures. There are good ideas, but the book is definitely lacking in making such small pictures. Very difficult to appreciate the presentations with the tiny pictures.

I am actually not done reading this but wanted to leave a review to say this book has been helping me so much. My fears of death are so intense, sometimes I have moments I just want to die, ironically, because it's too much to bare. Already, this book has given me a new perspective and is helping me not be so afraid. I'm glad I bought this as I am now not wanting to give up but instead live my life to the fullest.

This book was quoted in another book I just finished reading and I downloaded a sample first. Before I finished the sample, I bought the book. I was recently sick and had no medical diagnosis to my symptoms. An intense fear of death and dying arose several times during my sickness. Two such episodes were so powerful, I felt consumed by fear of dying daily. I wouldn't let myself go to sleep on some nights. When I started reading this book, I first was scared even more. All this death talk!! However, I could not stop reading! I was obsessed with reading more and just dealt with the fear. Now, that I've finished the book, I feel so much more peace, relief that there are many, countless, people who have felt what I have been feeling. That my fears are natural progression in life and not death premonitions. I really like the questions in the Afterward and will go back over time to answer these for myself and write them down. Thank you Dr. Yalom.

Incredible read. I read this as a mental health counseling student, with an interest in existential psychotherapy. But I would recommend it for ANYONE. I couldn't put it down and it gave me so much to think about. You don't need to be interested in mental health counseling or death terror to find this book amazing.

I am always skeptical of such books. I have read a few of them and I always found them missing the deep issues. This is not the case for Yalom’s book. The discussion is deep and resonates with my own understanding and concerns. The book is informed by the author’s years of experience as a therapist. The writing is enjoyable and engaging. This book, "Staring at the Sun: Overcoming the Terror of Death," is a great read for people who would like to learn a lot more about fear of death being universal and how it negatively influences many aspects of life. The author, Irvin D. Yalom, MD, is Professor of Psychiatry emeritus at Stanford University. Though he has a Jewish heritage, Dr. Yalom confessed to being an atheist. Religious people should not merely write off Yalom's insightful conclusions since he is an atheist. The fact that Yalom is an atheist does not invalidate his medical research, insights, and expertise. Atheism may be intellectual or a reaction to and a defense against the God of fear-based religion.The title, "Staring at the Sun," is pregnant with meaning. Yalom postulates that just as a person cannot stare at the sun without being physically blinded, no one can stare at death without being emotionally blinded. Phobia is from the Greek word "phobos"--fear. Humans have at least one phobia. Many have more than one, and some people have multiple phobias. Some of the more common phobias are: acrophobia (fear of heights), agoraphobia (fear of public places), algophobia (fear of pain), claustrophobia (fear of closed spaces), hemophobia (fear of blood), mysophobia (fear of dirt/germs), pathophobia (fear of disease), xenophobia (fear of strangers), and panophobia (fear of everything). Some clinicians have theorized that all phobias are just different manifestations of one primary phobia--the mother of all phobias.In this fascinating book, based on Yalom's lifetime work of studying fear of death and helping people deal with their phobias, it appears that there is One Great Phobia--FEAR OF DEATH! According to Yalom, "Death anxiety is omnipresent in the unconscious as an intrinsic component of the human condition; the absence of evident death anxiety at a conscious level does not mean that the individual is without death anxiety; death anxiety is easily aroused." He explained that for some people, death anxiety is in the background--corralled in the unconscious mind. "But for other people, the anxiety is louder, unruly, tending to erupt at three in the morning, leaving them gasping at the specter of death. They are besieged by the thought that they, too, will soon be dead--as will everyone around them...Thoughts of death may seep into and permeate your dreams no matter how hidden from your conscious mind. Every nightmare is a dream in which death anxiety has escaped its corral and menaces the dreamer."Omnipresent-death anxiety is immeasurably exacerbated by morbid fear of God and eternal damnation in literal hell fire which is spiritual terrorism. Conversely, fear of death is greatly ameliorated by a totally-loving conception of God and a sane, sensible explanation of purifying hell fire in the Holy Bible and other Holy Books which are emotionally-healing and life-transforming rather than worsening fear of "The One Great Phobia!"Boyd C. One of the best books I have read. Essentially, it helps you deal with issues you might have regarding death. If you have death anxiety which does not let you get rid of some things in the back of your mind then you should take a look. The book reads from the point of view of a therapist who has dedicated time to help people get rid of their fear of death. Not a boring read. Therapy for a cheap price.
